Fuson, Virginia89, died Saturday, September 14, 2013 at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Mrs. Fuson was airlifted to St. Francis September 6 after a stroke at her residence in The Hawthorne Inn, Galesburg. Her children, Harold (Pam), Charles (Anne Fitzgerald), Mary and Lyman (Sharon Cybart), were with her during the days before her death.
Mrs. Fuson was born June 14, 1924 in Beardstown. Her father, John Moon, an engineer on a steam-operated shovel called a clam shell, died the next year after a railroad maintenance accident. Her mother, Hazel Appleby, remarried in Galesburg in 1929 to Leonard Anderson.
Mrs. Fuson, a member of the Galesburg High School Class of 1942, briefly attended Knox College before taking a manufacturing job at Gale Products. There she met her future husband, Harold. The couple slipped away to be married in Virginia, Ill., not far from her Beardstown birthplace, on February 5, 1944.
For the next 20 years, Mrs. Fuson’s primary vocation was at home with her growing family. In 1964 Mr. Fuson was forced by a hip-related disability to retire. He assumed the household duties while Mrs. Fuson took advantage of her knack for numbers in a series of increasingly responsible banking jobs, ultimately retiring as the operations officer at Farmers & Mechanics Bank.
She often said the wartime work in the factory was her favorite paid occupation. She also enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished seamstress, crafting everything from 1940s dance gowns to infant outfits for her grandchildren. In the 1950s the couple became avid square dancers at the Do-Si-Do Club near Lake Bracken.
Mr. Fuson died in 1989, ending a remarkably successful 45 year marital partnership that saw all of their children attain college degrees. Mrs. Fuson’s brother, Lyman (Evelyn) died in 1986 and her half-sister, Alice Anderson (Wayne) Wilson, died in 1998. In addition to the children, one half-brother, L. William (Mary) Anderson of Cumming, Ga., four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive.
Mrs. Fuson was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, whose congregation she first joined as a child. Her husband chaired the committee that built the current church building at Knox and Day streets in the 1950s. Her daughter and best friend, Mary, a longtime first grade teacher in Alpha, directs the church choir.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Norman Mendell will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church or to the foundations that support Galesburg and AlWood schools. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
