murrell_lavern0001.jpgborn October 16, 1922 in Sedalia, Kentucky, died on August 24, 2012 at Manor Care nursing home, Rolling Meadows, Illinois
Her loving husband, Moses Murrell, preceded her in death on April 11, 1985. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce (and Albert) Kimbrough of Arlington Heights, IL; granddaughters, Kellie Mahone of Little Rock, AR and Kammie Allen of Naperville, IL; and two great-grandchildren, Austin and Bria Allen.
Lavern was raised in a loving family on a farm in Kentucky, along with five sisters. Her parents (Sumner and Janie Love) were strong, loving Christians.
Lavern, husband and daughter moved to Galesburg, IL in 1953. The transition (with the help of loving Galesburg relatives) was pleasant. She became a very proud member of Allen Chapel AME Church and a proud member of the Social Service Club of Galesburg, IL. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and arts and crafts. She was an immaculate housekeeper, so much so that one felt the need to remove one’s shoes upon entering her home. She worked part-time for the Galesburg School District as a cafeteria supervisor, which she enjoyed immensely.
Lavern was a very proud, strong-willed woman, who was raised in Kentucky during the Jim Crow era. There, she witnessed and experienced the practice of racial discrimination. As a result of her upbringing, she fought this practice by advancing the goals of the NAACP, setting a proud example for her daughter and grandchildren to do the same.
Lavern will sorely be missed by her ever-loving family.
Funeral services will be 1:30PM Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Tyson Parks officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30PM to 1:30PM at the Chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. Online condolences maybe made at www.h-p-w.com.
