83, of Galesburg, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, July 5, 2015 in Heartland Health Care Center.
He was born May 2, 1932 in Kewanee, Illinois, the son of Arthur L. and Mary M. (Winter) Copeland. He married Ardyce L. Harness on April 16, 1974 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She preceded him in death January 22, 2002.
He is survived by two sons, Daniel R. (and his wife, Amy) Copeland of Johnsburg, Illinois and Mark A. (and his friend, Dawn) Copeland of Galesburg; two daughters, Teresa L. (and her husband, Ray) Vogt of Friendship, Wisconsin and Constance S. (and her husband, David) Pauley of North Aurora, Illinois; a step son, Mark (and his wife, Kim) Stevens of Ottumwa, Iowa; two step daughters, Kathryn L. (and her husband, Tom) Barry and Shari K. (and her husband, Bret) Ford, both of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Black of Galva. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.
Vernon was a dispatcher for CB&Q/Burlington Northern Railroad for 41 years. He retired August 1, 1993. He had lived in North Aurora for 30 years before moving to Galesburg. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Aurora.
Vernon served in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1953 as a Boatswain’s Mate. He was a member of the Knoxville American Legion Post 749.
Private family visitation and funeral service will be held Friday, July 10, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
