Mr. Elmer Alfred Sickles, Jr., Abingdon Chapel

Obit_US_FlagSickles, Elmer Photoage 82 of Abingdon, died at 5:15 am Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
He was born on January 4, 1931 in Kirkwood, the son of Elmer Alfred and Hilda Irene (Dykeman) Sickles, Sr. He married Betty J. Schisler Dykeman on July 10, 1952 in Rosetta, Illinois.
Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty; one daughter, Anita (and Steve) Fordyce of Abingdon; three sons, Rodney Sickles of rural Avon, Kevin (and Susanne) Sickles of Abingdon and Gale (and Diana) Sickles of Abingdon; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sara Hull of Monmouth and Nellie Brownlee of Alexis. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.
Sickles, Elmer Photo2He was preceded in death by a brother Donald, an infant brother, and a son, Robert E. Dykeman.
He had lived most of his married life in the Abingdon area. He farmed all his life. He also worked at Gunther Construction in Galesburg for six years, and he worked as a butcher at Fey’s Locker Plant in Abingdon for several years and later at Kitch’s Locker Plant in Monmouth, retiring in 1992.
He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He attended the Berwick Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Tom Smith and Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow the service in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday at the chapel.
