Mr. Kenneth R. Severns, Abingdon Chapel

72 of Abingdon, died at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

He was born on January 14, 1943 in Galesburg, the son of Cline and Norma “Tootie” (Kilpatrick) Severns.  He married Katy Kendrick in 1963 in Abingdon.

Kenny is survived by his wife, Katy, two sons, Patrick Severns of Abingdon and   Chad Severns of Monmouth; two daughters, Toni (Monte) Coon of Fort Worth, Texas and Erica (Donald) Haywood of Abingdon; five grandchildren, Cody, Caleb, Ethan, Kendrick and Matthew; one brother, Jerry (Connie) Severns of Abingdon; two sisters, Deborah Watkins of Abingdon and Cathy (Rev. Ken) Klein of Marquette Heights; a half-brother, Dick (Mary Frances) Severns of Avon; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Norma J. Severns (infant), Donna Severns, Janet Miller and Joyce VanSkike, and two brothers, Ronald D. Severns (infant) and Rodney Severns.

He had lived in Abingdon all of his life.  He attended Abingdon Schools.  He retired from the Abingdon Pottery after working there many years.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening and NASCAR.  He was also an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Abingdon Cemetery.  Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Hinchliff-Person-West Abingdon Chapel.

66, of Galesburg died at 11:25 pm Monday, August 24, 2015 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born December 4, 1948 in Erie, Illinois the daughter of Ira and Anna Weimer Snodgrass. She married Norman D. Watts in Galesburg March 1970. He preceded her in death on January 5, 2004.
She is survived by her children, Randy (Brandy) Watts of North Henderson, Illinois, Brandon Watts of Galesburg, Jeff (Lucretia) Clark of Avon, Illinois, Sharlene Watts of Galesburg, Marla (and the late Ron) Mecum of Monmouth, Illinois and Jane (Harold) Jones of Prairie City, Illinois; three brothers, Don Snodgrass of Rapid City, Illinois, Glen (Mary) Snodgrass of Missouri, Dick (Eva) Snodgrass of Chana, Illinois, her sisters, Nancy Chandler of Prophetstown, Illinois, Judy Nolan of East Moline, Illinois, Sherry Davis of Rock Island, Illinois, Leona Rundall and Marie (Howard) Taylor both of Arkansas; eighteen grandchildren, Ricky Moore, Andrea, Trenton and Courtney Watts, Kelsey, Zachary, Trevor, and Nick Jones, Steven (Caitlyn), Kyle and Breanna Clark, Tashelle Mecum-McCall, Marissa, Keith, Cody, Dominique, Victoria and Matthew Mecum and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, John and Bobby, a grandson Cody Mecum, three brother-in-laws and one sister-in-law.
Barbara was a homemaker. She graduated from Erie High School in 1968 and had attended Carl Sandburg College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 am Monday, August 31, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 pm Sunday, August 30, 2015 at the chapel. DeWitt, Margaret89, formerly Galesburg, Illinois, died at 7:39 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015 in Maple Woods Assisted Living Center in Cohasset, Minnesota.
Margaret was born October 26, 1925 in Galesburg, the daughter of Martin and Hazel Sutton Bower. She married Russell DeWitt on June 4, 1947 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on November 3, 2013.
She is also survived by two sons, Donald (and Alice) DeWitt of Blackduck, Minnesota and James (and Rebecca) DeWitt of Roseville, Illinois; a daughter, Bonnie (and Martin) Hoadley of Kewanee, Illinois; two brothers, Robert Bower of Abingdon, Illinois and Leo Bower of Cooley City, Washington; eight grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and a grandson.
Margaret lived in Oquawka for 40 years before moving to Galesburg in 1999. She worked five years at the Admiral/Maytag Corporation and five years in housekeeping at Knox College.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2015 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. She was born July 8, 1944 in Monmouth, the daughter of Thomas and Violet (Shanks) Wilson. She married Roger Dean Peterson on June 17, 1965 in Greely, Colorado.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Roger; a son, John Michael (and Joanne) Curran of Galesburg; two daughters, Deborah (and Todd) Sallee of Victoria and Denise Morton of Anson, Texas; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and three brothers, Terry (and Rosa) Wilson of Laredo, Texas, Anthony (and Jean) Wilson of Astoria, and Tom (and Trish) Wilson of Roxboro, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Trudy was a scheduler for Heat and Control. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1962. Trudy enjoyed volunteering with the Knox Prairie Community Kitchen, Beacon of Hope Hospice, and the Stearman Fly-In. She also enjoyed ceramics and arts and crafts.
Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Vince Marolla officiating. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service with burial at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. He was born March 18, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan to Albert C. Dickson and Julia Knapp Clark Dickson.
He was married to Joy Steinbach Dickson for 41 years before her passing in 1995.
They raised four children in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, Henry “Chip” Dickson (Ellen), Clark “Bart” Dickson (Andrea), Helen “Joy” Dickson, and Albert “Ace” Dickson (Wendy). He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Laura, Julia, Henry, Alexandra, Alana, Ina, Ethan, and Abigail.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.
Left behind is his special friend, Ruth Pecsi of Galesburg, who was a close companion through his later years.
A loving, compassionate man, he maintained a curiosity about life and how society was changing. With a sharp mind and a quick wit, he was always ready for great conversation on a wide variety of topics.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 and was on his way to the Pacific Theater when the Japanese surrendered.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1951.
He had an extensive career in the banking business, working for National Bank of Detroit from 1951 to 1980 as department head for corporate business in Indiana and Ohio and president of National Bank of Dearborn, Harter Bank in Canton, Ohio from 1980 to 1983 as senior vice president of lending, and First Galesburg National Bank from 1983 to 1995 as chief administrating officer.
He took great pride in the number of businesses in Galesburg that he helped get a start with a business loan.
Dickson was very active in his retirement, serving in various positions on the Galesburg Chamber of Commerce from 1986 to 1993, where he received the Warren Outstanding Business Leader of the Year Award. He also served as interim chamber president, vice president, chairman of the budget and finance committee, and chairman of the housing task force.
He was also a member of the Galesburg Noon Rotary Club, treasurer of the Galesburg-Knox Symphony, member of the Soangetaha Country Club board, treasurer of the Visiting Nurse Association, and board member of the Galesburg Business and Technology Center.
The Dickson family is especially grateful to the Pecsi family for their friendship and love that has been provided to our father.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Michigan. Burial will be at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Michigan. She was born July 22, 2000 in Galesburg to Rick Allen and Michelle Genevieva Epperson.

Kylie was a sophomore at Galesburg High School where she was a member of the Color Guard and the Acapella Choir. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. She was active in the First Methodist Youth Group, Bell Choir, Youth Choir and “The Rock” after school program.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. Rev. Glen Bocox, Rev. Sarah Wanck and Rev. Stephen Descalzo will officiate. Visitation will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Poland, Irene Photo 95 of Abingdon was called to her heavenly home at 7:23 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 2015 at the Care Center of Abingdon.

She was born August 6, 1920 in rural Blandinsville, the daughter of Theodore Marshall Powell and Harriett Maude Luton Powell.  She eloped with the one and only love of her life, James Robert “Bob” Poland and they married on July 4, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on July 16, 1988.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Bettie Boelkes.

Irene is survived by two sons, Marshall (Connie) Poland of Abingdon and Dennis (Judy) Poland of Abingdon; five grandchildren, Dawn (Kert) Scalf, Dianna Poland, Darrin (Tammy) Poland, Jayne (Joe) Schreck and Andy (Shannon) Poland; ten great-grandchildren, Chaise Poland, Kennedi Poland, Emma Poland, Dalton Scalf, Vincent Haack, Cody Whiteside, Mackenzie Whiteside, Ryan Schreck, Tanner Schreck and Amanda Schreck; one great-great-grandchild, Blaine Haack.

She worked with family members and friends at Poland’s Grocery.  She enjoyed fishing and camping with her grandchildren.  She was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and her most valuable possession was her Bible on her bedside table.  She was former volunteer at the Care Center of Abingdon.  She loved to listen to big band music from the 40’s.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Abingdon Christian Church.  Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate.  Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg.  Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements

Mr. Robert H. “Bob” Batson, Abingdon Chapel

Batson, Robert Photo86 of Oquawka and formerly of Abingdon, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2015 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center after being surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 20, 1928 in Trenton, MO., the son of Charles and Dora (McCullough) Batson. He first married Shirley Kilpatrick in 1946 and they divorced. He married Sara Adams on February 10, 1974 in Abingdon, Illinois. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2007.

He was Plant Manager at Briggs Manufacturing in Abingdon retiring in 1994. He was President of International Association of Machinists Local Lodge 2079 at Briggs Manufacturing prior to becoming Plant Manager. He was a Volunteer Fireman and an Alderman in Abingdon. Bob loved working in his gardens, and being especially proud of his tomatoes, fishing, boating on the Mississippi and watching the Cardinals play baseball. Above all Bob loved his two cats, Flossie and Molly.

Bob is survived by his son, Mike (and Dale Lynn) Batson and his daughter, Susan (and JR) Wilson of Knoxville; his grandchildren, Travis Batson, Kasey (and Jim Osborne) Batson, Blake Batson, Chad (and Holly Maestas) Batson, Sara Batson and Robert (and Kelly) Purdy; his great-grandchildren, Charly Batson, Harly Osborne, Mika Osborne, Gavin Batson, Keegan (and Katie) Batson, Kiersten Davison, Kaley Purdy and Kinley Purdy; and a great-great-granddaughter due to be born in December; three brothers, Ronnie (and Joanne), Chuck (and Linda) all of Abingdon and Kenny (and Louise) of Little Swan Lake; four sisters, Betty Gordon, Shirley (and Harold) Blodgett, Mary Russo all of Abingdon and Patsy (and Glen) Lambert of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Harry Batson and Joseph (Art) Batson both of Abingdon; two brother in laws; George Gordon and Nick Russo all of Abingdon.

As per Bob’s request cremation was accorded and there will be no visitation or funeral services. pelton, dan49, of Woodhull, Illinois died at 9:18 am Monday, September 7, 2015 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.
He was born January 19, 1966 in Galesburg the son of Warren M. and Ruth Kay Leighton Pelton, Jr. He married Dawn M. Lindsey in Oneida, Illinois on September 4, 2004. She survives.
Also surviving is his father, Max Pelton, Jr. of Oneida, Illinois; his two brothers, Tim Pelton of Oakland, California and Bob (and Andrea) Pelton of Wataga, Illinois; his two cats, Lucy and Luther and a host of very close friends. He is preceded in death by his mother.
Diesel worked for Landcorp in Oneida as a truck driver for over 30 years. He graduated from ROVA High School in 1984. He enjoyed putting together model trucks.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Friday, September 11, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 pm Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the chapel. Burial will be in Oneida Cemetery. She was born August 16, 1918 in Norris City, Illinois, the daughter of Ernest and Nellie (McKenzie) Tarrant. She married Harold Dehler in 1950 in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in 1979.
She is survived by three children, Marcia (and Steve) Johnson of Galesburg, Thomas (and Connie) Dehler of Galesburg, and Frederick (and Brenda) Dehler of Bishop Hill; six grandchildren, Sheri (and Mike) Berg, Brittany (and Chase Harding) Dehler, Kelsi (and Nolan) Peterson, Geoffrey (and Nicole) Dehler, Nikki (and Andy) Lanxon, and Whitney Dehler; and six great grandchildren, Joshua (and Charlotte Niehoff) Knudsen, Abbie Berg, Morgan and Caleb Dehler, Owen Lanxon, and Beckett Peterson. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and Paul Tarrant.
Elsie was a dietician at the former Galesburg State Research Hospital, retiring in 1980. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Elsie enjoyed cooking, cutting recipes from magazines, and gardening.
Visitation will be 10 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Mary Runge officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heartland Health Care Center Activity Fund. She was born June 22, 1936 in Galesburg, Ill. the daughter of Clarence L. and Dorothy M. Klinth Tipton. She married Charles E. Welty April 29, 1966 in Galesburg, Ill. he preceded her in death April 17, 1997.
Inez is survived by one son Christopher E. and Paulette Welty of Lousiana, two daughters Tracy A. “Welty” and Charles Tomlinson, Jr., and Teresa A. Tew both of Galesburg, Ill., two brothers William and Alexandria “Sandy” Tipton of California, and David and Julie Tipton of Tennessee, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1954 and later worked for Sears Department Store for 15 years retiring in 2004. She was a member of the Moose Lodge in Galesburg.
Cremation will be accorded. Celebration of Life will be 1 pm Sunday September 13, 2015 at Henderson Ill. Township Hall. Graveside services will be 10 am Tuesday September 15, 2015 at Memorial Park Cemetery with Mr. Roger Reed officiating. Memorials may be made to the family.

He was born October 19, 1945 in Kentucky, the son of Arvel and Madgie (Vanover) Moore. He married Shirley Ann Ledbetter in 1972 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death December 30, 2013.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna Moore; a stepson, Mark Horne; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother Randy Moore; and three sisters, Peggie Warren, Martha Silcox, and Lorraine Nullins. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, Robert Horne; and five siblings.
As Donald wished, his body will be cremated and no visitation or service is planned.

He was born May 1, 1937, in Galesburg, the son of Floyd and Mabel (McLaren) Gilson.
He is survived by a lifelong friend, Darla Swinger and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Duane graduated from Galesburg High School in 1958. He was a lifelong resident of Galesburg. Duane had worked at the former Davis Food Store and was a driver for the Galesburg Rescue Mission for 14 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of First Church of the Open Bible, where he served as an usher and drove the church van. Duane was an avid Chicago Bears and White Sox fan.
Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2016 at First Church of the Open Bible. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor Mark Dexter officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. 72, of Galesburg, died at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2015 in the emergency room of Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born September 25, 1942 in Percy, Illinois, the son of Earl H. and Margaret L. (Bergfeld) Jehling. He married Karen J. Smith on September 15, 1963 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Karen; two sons, Bryan (and Amy) Jehling of Tempe, Arizona and Jeffrey (and Elaine) Jehling of Galesburg; three grandchildren, Vanessa, Maureen, and Tyler Jehling; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Allen Jehling.
Paul was a cashier at the Bank of Galesburg for several years. He then was the district office manager for Alexander Lumber Company before retiring in February of 2002. He had taught banking classes at Carl Sandburg College. He graduated from Galva High School in 1960. He went on to attend Illinois State University and graduated from Brown’s Business College.
He was an active member of First Christian Church, where he had served as a Deacon and on the Board of Trustees. Paul had been a Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed painting on canvas and was known for keeping an immaculate yard.

98, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 6:00 am Wednesday, September 23, 2015 in Montebello Nursing home in Hamilton, Illinois.
She was born May 29, 1917 in Monmouth, Illinois the daughter of Howard and Lola Law Carrier. She first married James Palmer in 1940 in Burlington, Iowa. She later married Paul Steck on June 3, 1977 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on August 13, 2002.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda (and Bill) Robinson of Warsaw, Illinois and Paula (and Steven) Miller of Grant, Florida; one brother, Joseph Carrier of Industry, Illinois; four grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her son, Jim Palmer, her daughter, Nancy Palmer, three brothers and two sisters.
Roberta worked as a LPN at Cottage Hospital for 18 years. She graduated from Monmouth High School in 1936 and attended Monmouth College. She was a member of the Home Extension. Roberta was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 11 am Friday, September 25, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Jim Richardson will officiate. Visitation will be 10-11 am Friday at the chapel. ??????????86, of Galesburg, died at 12:26 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2015 in Marigold Health Care Center.
She was born May 27, 1929 in Kewanee, Illinois, the daughter of William John and Mable J. (Wright) Blodgett. She married Theodore Earl Hoffman April 12, 1947 at First Baptist Church in Galesburg. He preceded her in death November 22, 1999.
She is survived by four children, Ted (and Hillary) Hoffman of Galesburg, Steve (and Judy) Hoffman of Pekin, Gary Hoffman of Abingdon, and Lisa (and Mark) Sprague of Cypress, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Audrey Bellin and Shirley Brock. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, John and Joe; a granddaughter, Crissy; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Frances worked at Kresge’s for many years before moving to K Mart, where she worked for 25 years before retiring January 5, 1994. She was of the Baptist faith. Frances loved being around her large rambunctious family, especially for Sunday dinner. She was always generous with her time and thought the best of everyone. She loved singing, dancing, and working in her garden.
Visitation will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2015 at the chapel with Rev. Miller, Dorothy91, of Galesburg, passed away at 8:17 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at home.
She was born November 5, 1923, in Kewanee, the daughter of Felix A. and Mabel (Celander) Kirby. She married B. Jack Miller on August 17, 1947 in Kewanee. He preceded her in death on October 21, 1994.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane (and Mike) Sands of Converse, Texas and Nancy McGill of Galesburg; a sister, Ruthann (and Eugene) Duke of Lake City, Florida; a sister-in-law, Ann Kirby of Forest Hills, New York; a brother-in-law, Thomas Rohwer of Austin, Texas; a step grandson, Hunter Sands; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death her parents; a brother, William “Bill” Kirby; and two sisters, Viola Haley and Marjorie Rohwer.
Dorothy was valedictorian of the great class of 1941 at Kewanee High School and attended Western Illinois University. She worked at Kewanee Boiler Corporation for 10 years, was a stay at home mom for 18 years, and then was secretary at Tucker-Swanson Realtors for 20 years, retiring in 1990.
A longtime member of First Baptist Church, she sang in the choir, was church clerk, and an officer in the American Baptist Women. She also volunteered at the Cottage Hospital Gift Shop for many years and enjoyed being a member of The Study Club of Galesburg.
Her special joys were being with family and friends, her coffee group, reading, traveling, walking, especially in earlier years with her “walking partners”, and her beloved cat, Buddy.
Visitation will be noon to 1:45 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2015 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Memorial contributions in Dorothy’s name may be made to First Baptist Church or Knox County Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
